À propos de Ethereum

Ethereum is a distributed blockchain computing platform for smart contracts and decentralized applications. The network enables users to build extensively through the use of smart contracts and has since led to the creation of various new assets and industries, such as Decentralized Finance (DeFi), Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs), Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAOs), Web3, and more. It features an execution engine optimized for smart contract processing, the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), and a Proof-of-Stake (PoS) consensus mechanism.

Contexte

Vitalik Buterin conceived the concept of Ethereum in 2013 due to limitations in the functionality of Bitcoin’s scripting language, namely the lack of Turing completeness. The aim was to create a new blockchain network that enabled users to build extensively on top of it in ways not permitted on Bitcoin. Buterin published the first Ethereum whitepaper in 2014, describing a distributed computing platform for executing smart contracts and building decentralized applications. Later, in 2014, Buterin, Mihai Alisie, Anthony Di Iorio, Amir Chetrit, Charles Hoskinson, Gavin Wood, Jeffrey Wilcke, and Joseph Lubin founded the Ethereum Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to Ethereum’s research, core protocol development, and ecosystem growth.

Ethereum's mainnet launch (Genesis Block) occurred on July 30, 2015, with the first live release, Frontier. Shortly after that, Augur conducted the first Initial Coin Offering (ICO) on Ethereum, in which the startup sold Ethereum-based REP tokens (created via the ERC-20 token standard) to help fund the project. The ability to develop and sell a newly generated token to help raise capital would become an attractive method of fundraising. Since Augur’s ICO, numerous Ethereum-focused startups have used the ICO model to raise funds.

April 2016

In April 2016, a decentralized venture fund, The DAO, hosted an ICO, raising $150.00 million in ETH. A few months later (June 2016), an attacker exploited a bug in one of The DAO's smart contracts, enabling the attacker to siphon ~3.60 million ETH (~4.49% of the total token supply in June 2016, or $40.00-$60.00 million at the time). A significant portion of the Ethereum community opted to revert the blockchain to remove The DAO and its subsequent hack from the network's history. The opposing stakeholders held the preservation of immutability in higher regard and refused to accept a ledger rewrite. The divide in the community led to a contentious hard fork a few weeks post-hack, causing a permanent split in the network. The legacy chain that did not reverse its transaction history is now known as Ethereum Classic (ETC).

Ethereum initially utilized a Proof-of-Work (PoW) consensus mechanism, in which scalability and high energy usage were known issues. Periods of high user activity, as seen during the CryptoKitties launch in November 2017 and the DeFi boom during the Summer of 2020, caused transaction times, fees, and energy usage to increase substantially. To partially alleviate these concerns, Ethereum began transitioning to Proof-of-Stake (PoS), otherwise known as “The Merge.”

The Beacon Chain, which introduced the PoS mechanism to Ethereum, launched on Dec. 1, 2020, with the goal of bootstrapping a set of validators to establish network security and sufficient decentralization before Ethereum fully transitioned to PoS. It allowed users to run validators by staking ETH on the Beacon Chain to operate the new consensus layer. Before “The Merge,” the Beacon Chain ran parallel to the PoW blockchain.

Aug. 5, 2021

On Aug. 5, 2021, the ”London” hard fork went live, adding EIP-1559. This network upgrade activated a fee burn mechanism that burns a portion of every network transaction fee users pay (in ETH). When a user submits a transaction, a fluctuating portion of the gas fee, based on network activity (called the “base fee”), is burned. The remaining portion of the gas fee (called the “priority fee” or tip) is distributed to the validator that proposes the block that includes the gas fee’s associated transaction.

”The Merge” occurred on Sept. 15, 2022, and successfully replaced Ethereum’s PoW consensus mechanism with the Beacon Chain PoS consensus mechanism. At the same time, miners stopped serving a role in the network, and validators assumed all block production. Additionally, “The Merge” reduced ETH supply issuance and the network's energy consumption.

April 12, 2023

On April 12, 2023, Ethereum’s Shapella (Shanghai + Capella) upgrade went live, introducing withdrawals to the Beacon Chain and allowing validators to claim ETH rewards. Following the upgrade, it is possible to fully exit the validation protocol and withdraw the 32 ETH collateral, if desired.

March 13, 2024

On March 13, 2024, the “Dencun Upgrade” was completed, implementing EIP-4844, which includes a new transaction type known as “Proto-Danksharding,” allowing Layer-2 rollups to post cheaper transaction data to Ethereum via “blobs” of data.

Ethereum developers have further broken down network upgrades into multiple phases, otherwise known as the Ethereum Roadmap, to minimize complexity as they add more features. Outstanding items on the roadmap are as follows:

Throughout early 2025, the Ethereum Foundation underwent a major leadership restructuring. In March, Hsiao-Wei Wang and Tomasz K. Stańczak were appointed as co-executive directors, reflecting a conscious shift toward a dual-leadership model that balances technical depth with organizational governance.

July 2025

In July 2025, the U.S. SEC formally approved in-kind creation and redemptions for all spot Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs, streamlining institutional participation. Alongside ETFs, Ethereum-focused Digital Asset Treasury companies also increased.

Additionally, Grayscale added staking functionality to both its Ethereum Trust ETF (ETHE) and Ethereum Mini Trust ETF (ETH) becoming the first US-listed spot crypto ETFs to offer staking rewards, allowing investors to earn passive rewards while maintaining spot exposure to Ethereum.
