How it is built
Circulating supply times daily average price. Supply is the mined total, so provably lost coins are counted as if they still trade.
What to watch
Market cap is an accounting fiction taken literally: it prices the last coin traded as if every coin could sell there. That is precisely why comparing it to realized cap is informative — the gap between the two is the paper profit the market has not yet tested.
